Merdeka!!Merdeka!!

Malaysian Flag

The Malaysian flag is known as 'Jalur Gemilang' (Glorious Stripes)

The Malaysian flag, named Jalur Gemilang with effect from August 31 1997, consist of 14 red and white stripes of equal width, a union of carton of dark blue, a crescent and a star. The red and white stripes stand for the equal status in the Federation of the member states and the Federal government. The union of carton of dark blue in the upper quarter of the flag next to the staff represents the unity of the people of Malaysia. The union contains the crescent which is the symbol of Islam, and the star with its 14 points symbolises the unity of the 13 states of the Federation with the Federal government. The yellow of the crescent and the star is the royal colour of the hereditary Malay Rulers.

The universal wording of the Rukun Negara is acceptable to all Malaysian citizens.

Rukun Negara

The Rukun Negara was first introduced after the communal clashes of May 13, 1969. The adoption of the 5 principles or Rukun Negara as pillars of the national philosophy and outlook represents an attempt to base national unity on certain concepts which are universal and acceptable to all citizens of Malaysia, regardless of their ethnic origin or religious affiliation.

The declaration of the 5 principles is formulated as follows: -

"Our nation Malaysia is dedicated to:

  1. Achieveing a greater unity for all her peoples
  2. Maintaining a democratic way of life
  3. Creating a just society in which the wealth of the nation shall be equitably distributed
  4. Ensuring a liberal approach to her rich and diverse cultural tradtions
  5. Building a progressive society, orientated towards modern science and technology."

merdeka! merdeka! merdeka!
It rings true through the ears
Many years I hear the shout
In the memory I once was

the cultivation of many races
the planting of many seeds
the growing of many faces
only the common bond glues us
the malaysia my home country

the interaction through the years
how it brings one's freedom
though laws and legislations
restricted the movements each
and everyone in the grouping

now she is 47 years old
matured with all the experiences
to weather the stormy affairs
that comes through the eyes
the western world which rules

the terrorists and the pass word
the evils that people do
nothing is so different
at least i enjoy my freedom
day through the night
i see many races smile

malaysia my home country
the many races to salute
living in harmony and peace
sometimes arguing never end
the lop sided benefits to serve
the rich and well connected
living the unfortunates begging
the good natured of the masses

still malaysia my home country
i have my freedom and my dreams
say what you want about her age
i am the one always grateful
she gives me company through
the years i squat on her steps
waiting for her to lavish me more!

cheers
